Jacob and Sarah Conklin

 

The Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia borders Maryland and Virginia. The first European settlers started arriving about 1730.

West Virginia is located in the Appalachians and was originally part of Virginia. The capital and largest city is Charleston. It became a state during the Civil War and was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863.

Many Scots-Irish and English settlers came to the Shenandoah Valley from Pennsylvania in the 18th century.

Jacob Conklin was born about 1724.

He married about 1756. His children were born in a part of Frederick County, Virginia which is now Jefferson County, West Virginia.

John Conklin was born March 14, 1756. David Conklin was born on July 18, 1760. Mary Conklin Lupton was born July 5, 1765. Hannah Conklin West was born February 24, 1769, Jacob Conklin was born August 16, 1771. Henry Conklin was born November 5, 1774.

In February, 1776, the Reverend Philip Vickers Fithian spent a night at John's future father-in-law, Peter Burr's, house. He had come to preach to the Elk Branch Presbyterian congregation. He wrote that it was

. . . a Settlement of my Countrymen. Mr Burr, Tully, Conklin, Boyd, Sayre, Garrison, with their Families, and others. dined at Mr. Burr's. He is a good-Liver, as it is commonly said. Appears to be a modest, sensible Man, & is in high Repute (Albion and Dodson, p. 181).

And according to Jefferson County Historical Society Magazine (2011)
edited by James L. Glymph, he continued

Monday, I made Mr [Jacob] Conklin a Vist. poor Man he has many Afflictions!

In April, 1776, Michael Blue leased 450 acres in Berkeley County and subleased 150 to Jacob Conkling. 

Mary married Benjamin Lupton about 1785 in Jefferson County.

The deed for the Presbyterian church in Charleston, Virginia was signed and delivered February 17, 1787. The deed was made "to David Kennedy, John White, Peter Burr and Jacob Conchlin (farmers)."

Frederick County marriages:
Michael Conklin married Rachel Taylor in Frederick County, Virginia on December 2, 1789.
John Lupton and Elizabeth Cartmell July 20, 1790 E.P.
Jacob Conklin, Jr. married Sarah Williams on February 7, 1792 in Frederick County.

John married Miriam Burr on June 24, 1793 in Frederick County.

Henry Conklin married Mary Yerkes about 1795.

The Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly lists Jacob Conklin from Jefferson County, Virginia as an early settler in Champaign County, Ohio.

The New River flows through North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia .In 1755, Mary Draper Ingles (1732-1815) was captured by Shawnee warriors near Blacksburg and taken to Ohio. She escaped and made her way home by following the Ohio, Kanawha, and New Rivers.

Appalachia was the 18th century backcountry and many settlers were Scots-Irish. It includes southern New York, western Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Virginia, West Virginia, eastern Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee and northern Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia.
